Jamali: A Loyalist Baloch or a Nationalist
Baloch?
Friday, July 14, 2006
PRESS RELEASE:
KALAT, Balochistan – Pakistani military dictator General Pervez Musharraf
(and the armed forces) has a staunch ally among the Baloch elite – the former
prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali.
The current political atmosphere in Pakistan, pressure from the U.S. for elections next year, and the crisis in
occupied Balochistan and Waziristan are signs perceived by the people to exhibit the gradual culmination of
General Musharraf’s military regime. To expedite the process, opportunistic political parties are scrambling to form
alliances to initiate impeachment process against the dictator.
But, Jamali has shrewdly taken an early position to support Musharraf knowing very well that the Generals always
control the real political power in Pakistan. Being known as a stooge of Pakistani military, Jamali stated in a press
conference, “I will not support impeachment against president General Pervez Musharraf.”
To counter any criticism directed at the Pakistani armed forces or his overlord Musharraf, Jamali portrays an image
of being one of the few moderate Baloch politician left on this planet who is sensible enough to propose peaceful
dialogue between the military regime and the “warring” Baloch chieftains to resolve the crisis in Pakistani-occupied
Balochistan. To gain personal political leverage and longevity, Jamali has definitely harmed the Baloch freedom
struggle and tarnished the image of Baloch Nationalist leadership who are fighting the “Baloch War of
Independence” to liberate Balochistan. Jamali’s stance as pro military, pro government, and pro Punjab Raj have
given more ammunition to the Pakistani propaganda machinery to launch vicious media campaigns against the
Baloch nation and its leadership.
Now, Jamali has pulled yet another trick out of his hat like a magician by proposing that the province of Punjab
should be divided into three provinces – Siraiki, Pothohar, and Central Punjab provinces. He reasoned that this
division would ensure a balanced government system in the country, which is a must for the success of the
federation (and its occupation of Balochistan). But, the true intent of this strategy is to give the “impression” to the
oppressed minorities in Pakistan that it is not the Punjabi Raj that rules the country, but the Sirakis, Pothoharis,
Centralians, etc. are jointly ruling Pakistan and its occupied territories.
Dividing Punjab as proposed by Jamali is just an illusion to confuse the minorities – the Baloch, Pashtuns and
Sindhis. A similar illusion was imposed on the minorities once before in 1955 by converting all the provinces and
occupied territories of West Pakistan into a One-Unit scheme. Nothing ever good came out it for the minorities. But,
the Punjabis were allowed free access to buy properties, start businesses, register as voters, and take up
employment in occupied Balochistan, Pakhtunkhaw (officially known as the Northwest Frontier Province), and Sindh.
No matter what Jamali propose to do with Punjab, the reality is that the Punjabi Raj rules Pakistan and its occupied
territories through brute force of its Punjabi-dominated armed forces.
The Baloch nation has tolerated Jamali’s political antics for years out of respect for his ethnic roots being from a
notable Baloch tribe. But now, especially during this critical juncture in Baloch history, this man has proven his
loyalty to the same Pakistani military regime and its leader General Musharraf that are killing innocent, non-
combatant Baloch men, women, and children. Furthermore, Jamali is least concerned about the plight of Baloch
Refugees who are in dire straights and need help.
Dawn newspaper’s reporter, Bahzad Alam Khan, asked Jamali about the thousands of Baloch Refugees from the
Bugti tribe who were languishing in the Naseerabad and Jafarabad areas, a stronghold of the Jamali tribe. His
response was, “Bugti DBs (displaced people) are a problem for us. You see, they are not accustomed to living in
peace and harmony. In the past, they lived by plunder and loot. Such offences obviously did not add to their
popularity among the people of neighboring cities who were their victims. But, the government seems to be
determined to change the demographic complexion of Dera Bugti.”
Mir Azaad Khan Baloch, general secretary of the newly formed Government of Balochistan (GOB) in Exile was
furious when he read the statement of Jamali in Thursday’s Dawn newspaper. Baloch retorted, “Has Zafarullah
stooped so low in front of his Punjabi masters that he can’t even see the sufferings of another human being, let
alone that they are from his own race? Has this man lost his mind to be so insensitive towards this humanitarian
tragedy which is unfolding in his front yard while he is concerned about ‘living in peace and harmony’?”
Baloch said, “The Baloch nation has tolerated this man for too long. Zafarullah doesn’t deserve to be called a
Jamali nor a Baloch. He has shamed the whole Baloch nation by his actions to discredit the Baloch freedom
struggle, his callousness towards the Baloch Refugees, and his loyalty to the ‘Butchers of the Baloch’: the Punjabi
Raj and its armed forces.”
He added, “A man like Zafarullah is a prime example of a Baloch Loyalist. These people have sold their soul, their
family, their future generations, and their nation for monetary and political gains. They protect their personal interest
at the expense of the people they are supposed to lead. Loyalists are enemies and traitors of the Baloch nation, and
I declare Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali a loyal servant of the Punjabi Raj, the invaders of Balochistan and oppressors
of the Baloch people.”
