Nawab Akbar Bugti is a martyr.
Former U.S. Ambassador Robert Oakley
WASHINGTON DC -- Former U.S. Ambassador Robert Oakley on Thursday called Nawab Akbar Bugti a martyr. In a condolence message
sent to U.S.-based Baloch journalist Ahmar Mustikhan, Oakley said "No doubt he welcomed a martyr's death, in combat. We shall all miss
him."Oakley is said to have become a close personal friend of Bugti during his posting as U.S. envoy to Pakistan .
Oakley said he worked together closely with Nawab Bugti and had developed a good personal relationship during his period as US
Ambassador to Pakistan 1988-1991. According to analysts, Nawab Bugti's one-on-one meetings with Oakley earned him the ire of the
Pakistan intelligence establishment. Nawab Bugti's son Salal Bugti was killed the year after Oakley completed his stint as ambassador.
"Behind his idiosyncracies, he was a very intelligent man committed to what he saw as best for his country as well as his tribe and clan,
open to reason," Oakley said. The Pakistani intelligence feared Nawab Bugti might have conveyed to Oakley the Baloch aspirations for an
independent state.
"Nawab Akbar Bugti leaves behind a myriad of friends and admirers, of which I am certainly one," Oakley said.
