Balochistan opposition leader seeks world intervention

By our correspondent

KARACHI: The Leader of Opposition in the Balochistan Assembly and the National Party (NP) leader Mir Kachkol
Ali advocate has appealed to the United Nations, United States, European Union, Group of Eight countries and
civilized world to intervene and stop this "worst kind of human rights violation" and the killing of innocent people in
the province.

He made this appeal while addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club on Saturday, claiming that
more than 200 innocent people were killed and hundreds of others were injured due to bombing and firing.
He said that gunship helicopters and fighter planes were being used in the operation that started from 17
December last year, in which women, children and aged people were falling victims in Kohlu, Dera Bugti and Sui
areas.

The opposition leader in Balochistan Assembly said that a large number of people, including women, children
and aged people, had left their homes in Kuhlo, Dera Bugti and Sui and were now living in forests and
mountainous areas in a highly miserable condition. He said they have no food to survive as the security forces
had cordoned off the entire area and were not allowing the people to come out or enter these areas.
Kachkol Ali said the report of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Chairperson Asma Jehangir
about these areas had proved that massive human rights violation was occurring in the area as the people were
being killed in bombing and firing. He urged the rulers to avoid crushing the Baloch community, rather resolve the
matter through political dialogue.

Mir Kachkol Ali said that an anarchy-like situation was prevailing in the country as the rulers were out to raise
controversial issues like Kalabagh dam, Balochistan operation and Bajour Agency attacks. "Serious minded
people as well as intellectuals are very much concerned and worried over this situation," he added.
The NP leader said that Saudi Arabia, an old friend of Pakistan, also got disappointed due to the "wrong policies"
of the Pakistani rulers.
He opined that it was an alarming situation that Saudi Arab established friendly relations with India, with Saudi
king declaring India as his second home.
Mir Kachkol Ali said the United States attack on Bajaur Agency had proved that the supper power did not repose
trust in Pakistani rulers. He advised the rulers to take serious notice of this situation, which has turned "very
serious and alarming". On the occasion, Kachkol asked as to why the operation was not launched in Rawalpindi
and Attock after the attacks on President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
Mir Kachkol Ali also asked as to why the operation was launched in Dera Bugti and Sui, whereas the rockets were
fired in Kuhlo during Gen Musharraf’s visit, describing the reason of the rulers as "double standard".
He said the rulers have in fact planned to occupy the natural resources of Balochistan, adding huge petrol
reserves exist in Marri area, gas in Dera Bugti and Sui, while Saindak possesses gold, silver and chromites
reserves.

"The rulers would have to face strong resistance in Balochistan as the people of the province are very much
matured and would not allow invasion on their natural resources," Mir Kachkol Ali added. Dr Abdul Malik Baloch
was also present on the occasion.
